Mykonos Town is an amazing mix of a bustling harbour, narrow streets, colourful houses and windmills. The waterfront is an iconic part of the town, where small boats mingle in the water with the seagulls and pelicans. The shoreline is full of restaurants, it is the perfect place to grab a frappe (iced coffee) and a souvlaki and watch the people wander past. Mykonos could make an industry of people watching. The extravagant and glamorous rub shoulders with students and backpackers, and everybody appears to get along in these narrow, cobbled streets, made by the Venetians to keep the Meltemi breeze at bay. Mykonos has been the location for many films, most notably Shirley Valentine, and The Bourne Identity. The most notable Myconian scenes are found at the windmills located on the hills behind the town, the church of Paraportiani, on the town’s harbour, and Little Venice, where the houses, with their whitewashed walls and colourful balconies hang back onto the sea. The nightlife of Mykonos Town is extraordinary and like the shops, the clubs and bars cater for all types of people. In Little Venice there are a number of sophisticated piano bars for those after a less raucous time, while nearer Paraportiani, the traditional Greek music clubs sit near the backpacker bars. Just behind the port, are some of the more notorious bars . Mykonos is a gay friendly island, it known as the gay capital of the Mediterranean, and the clubs and bars are all very open to this lifestyle.

The beaches are found all over the island, from the quieter, more family friendly Platys Yialos, to the happening and club atmosphere of Paradise and Super Paradise, the beaches in Mykonos are stunning and a must do, if anything for the people the beaches attract and the wonders of the clear blue waters. You can either rent a moped, catch a bus or a taxi to get to the beach. Paradise and Super Paradise beaches have clubs and bars nearby. The people watching is particularly good and you can easily spend the day watching people coming off the tourist boats wandering around as you have a souvlaki and a frappe at a waterside cafe. Head back from the port and wander the famous maze like streets, but watch out for Petros the Pelican, one of the many characters who wander the streets by day and night. Once night comes, the party scene heats up. Or you may choose to have a quiet night after a full day of fun.

  • Mykonos Day 3

A trip to Mykonos really should include a visit to Delos, the island which is the true heart of the Cyclades Islands and a fascinating half a day trip. Delos is uninhabited, but the ruins that remain are a fascinating insight into one of the most advanced civilizations at the time. Running water, two story homes, decorative streets and temples are found at the remains of this once thriving trading port. As all visitors have to be off Delos by 3.00 pm, on your return to Mykonos town you are free to do as you please, whether you return to your hotel for a rest and a sleep, continue shopping, or dance the night away once again.
